My Bag of Wonders

I describe my to-go tech bag

an open bag of electronics, slightly raided as the photo is taken mid-conference

I usually work from home, but about once per month I have to go to either a conference, a workshop, or some other thing that takes me away from home for a few days.

When I do, I throw in my Bag of Wonders into the luggage, trusting that this will contain everything that I might need tech-wise:

  • A travel adapter to use any power outlet worldwide - it also has USB-A and C outlets.
  • A USB charger that can deliver power to 3 USB-C and one USB-A connection
  • some USB-C cables, at least one being high bandwith thunderbolt
  • Adaptors to USB-A and Micro USB
  • A small magnetic puck to charge my smartwatch
  • A "USB Condom", in case I have to use sketchy USB power outlets
  • A cordless presentation clicker
  • replacement tips for a digital stylus (this is actually not needed currently, but the box is so small, it stays in just in case)
  • a USB-C docking adapter that exposes various ports and card reader slots
  • a travel mouse
  • a USB stick that has a USB-A and a USB-C end - sometimes, being able to copy things instead of relying on the internet is quite useful
  • spare AAA batteries - it's what the mouse uses, and a lot of other gadgets one might come across
  • a small round digital display badge that I can stick on instead of a conference badge. The badge can display any PNG, but has my two job titles and a QR code with my contact vcard loaded up.

That's the obvious tech side. But there's a few other goodies too:

  • a small roll of black tape - one never knows when that comes in handy, for example taping down a loose network cable
  • 3D printed doohickeys where you can slot in these bullshit hotel "theft proof" clothes hangers, to hang them anywhere instead of just the clothes rack in the hotel wardrobe
  • a tube of throat lozenges - to keep my voice going
  • various pens and pencils - always useful
  • band aids - one never knows
  • a small paper notebook and a paper notepad - to use the pencils on :)
  • a small multitool (allegedly airport security approved) - scissors, files, pliers...
  • a cleaning cloth - for glasses
  • over the counter pain relief pills - I think that's obvious
  • at least one of these complimentary hotel "sew a button back on" kits - came in handy at least two times already.
  • a slim metal case with business cards - 'duh

What's not in there?

  • an HDMI or DisplayPort cable - too bulky to add, and so far, all of the time I need to present, there's a cable there already
  • dedicated non-USB-C cables - that's what the adaptors are for
  • a powerbank - again, too bulky, and I usually am able to find some sort of outlet, and in a pinch, the laptop can top up the phone.
